How do I read an ICD-10 code?

ICD-10-CM codes have three to seven characters. The first character is a letter (A-Z, except U used for special purposes) indicating the chapter. Characters 2-3 specify the category. Characters after the decimal point add etiology, anatomic site, severity, and clinical detail. Example: E11.65 = Endocrine (E) → Diabetes (11) → Type 2 with hyperglycemia (.65).

What is the difference between ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS?

ICD-10-CM is for diagnoses and is used on every U.S. healthcare claim. ICD-10-PCS is the Procedure Coding System used for inpatient hospital procedures (UB-04 institutional billing). Outpatient and professional procedures use CPT and HCPCS codes instead. This tool covers ICD-10-CM only.

How often are ICD-10-CM codes updated?

CDC publishes new ICD-10-CM codes annually with an October 1 effective date for the federal fiscal year. Mid-year errata are published as needed. Medonix refreshes the SSG dataset against each annual release.

Can I use a non-billable ICD-10 code on a claim?

No. Non-billable codes (typically the 3-character category headers like A00 or E11) are not specific enough to bill. They exist as parent groupings in the code hierarchy. To submit a claim you must use a billable leaf code (e.g., E11.9, A00.0). The lookup highlights billable status on every code detail page.
